From a young age, I have always loved
to draw, sketch and explore different patterns and forms. This is one major
reason that led me on to the field of Architecture. Sir Norman Foster, who graduated from Manchester has really been an inspiration for me, his buildings are very intelligently as well as artistically designed, his work has encouragde me to further my education at Manchester. Furthermore MSA will give me the
chance to develop my skills further and guide me to my dream career. It will
also allow me to meet and integrate with different people from different
background, and learn from them their viewpoints and experiences.
Recently, I have been on a trip to
Hong Kong. The Bank of China Tower was the first building to grab my attention
as I look across the skyline. The building’s irregular form stood out from all
of its surrounding. The prism-like façade is the work of a Pritzker
prizewinner, Ieoh Ming Pei, who is well known as a master of contemporary architecture. The building has been compared to a bamboo plant, which extends
its trunk successively higher with each new burst of growth. The triangular
shapes give the building a unique feel and the use of clear glass reflects the
surrounding city of Hong Kong. However the design was criticise by masters of ‘feng shui’ for its sharp
edge top and ‘X’ shapes on its first design and the design needed to be modified, yet IM Pei rejected this modification. This realization that ‘feng shui’
can also affect the designs and process in architecture surprises me but this
extra challenge attracts me further to the field.
Frank Gehry,
is known for his deconstructivism. His works are distinct and
innovative. Two great examples of his originality are the Guggenheim Museum
Bilbao in Spain and the Dancing House in Prague. These two buildings hold
common features and concepts including deconstructive forms and curvaceous
sculpture style, which are signatures of Gehry’s building. The
Guggenheim museum is an example of an expressionist modern architecture that I
would love to see in person and experience the sleek curve of the construction. The building is full of individuality in its form,
with the atmosphere of an art sculpture, but also is a carrier of art space
within itself. The sculpture’s interconnected volumes of glass curtains really inspire
my imagination, the fluidity and flow of each column into one another is pure
fascination.
I am confident that my enthusiasm, creativity and
individuality will contribute greatly to Manchester. On the other hand, Manchester will give me the opportunity to combine both my creativity
and skills to fulfill my dreams. My dreams of creating buildings that will have
significant contributions to the built environment and support the better
quality of life for every individual.
